Dr. Matthew Hallowell

Dr. Matt Hallowell has dedicated his career to the mission of eliminating Serious Injuries and Fatalities through science. He is the Founder and Executive Director of the Construction Safety Research Alliance and a Chaired Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder.


He is the author of the international bestselling book “Energy-Based Safety,” which synthesizes two decades of research into a cohesive, evidence-based framework for SIF prevention. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal papers that translate foundational safety science into practical, field-ready tools.


Matt serves as the principal technical advisor to major industry organizations such as the Edison Electric Institute, helping companies align their safety systems to SIF prevention using evidence-based strategies. His approach is grounded in firsthand experience as a construction laborer, ensuring that scientific rigor remains firmly connected to the realities of daily work.

A first-generation college graduate and mentor to more than a dozen PhD students who are now professors at leading universities, Matt is committed to building a global, collaborative community focused on eliminating SIFs.
