Decluttering Safety

Safety is notorious for excessive paperwork; irrelevant policies; and redundant activities. We often add the latest safety ‘thing’ to our safety systems, but we never seem to take anything away.

No one likes clutter. It's annoying, frustrating, and inefficient. Safety is notorious for excessive paperwork; irrelevant policies; and redundant activities. We often add the latest safety ‘thing’ to our safety systems, but we never seem to take anything away. Our vision is to begin identifying and removing redundant safety clutter in favor of high-value activities that effectively prevent serious injuries and fatalities. To this end, we will deploy industry-level learning teams that define and categorize different types of clutter and run field experiments to measure the consequence of removing it. The project will yield a protocol for decluttering safety and scientific evidence that companies may reference when daring to remove something from their safety systems.
